SUMMARY:Wan Word
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together artists Kanna Anigbogu\, Abdul Hamid Kanu Jr. and Don Kwan to explore memory\, cultural history and the diasporic experience. Through black-and-white photography\, digital art and mixed media inspired by family archives\, the works reflect cultural resilience and personal narratives. Kanu captures Sierra-Leonean communities reconnecting with their heritage. Anigbogu uses Igbo motifs to evoke the freedom of youth. Kwan illuminates intergenerational Chinese-Canadian stories through resonant objects. \nCurator Yanaminah Thullah examines “diasporic nostalgia” — a longing for one’s homeland intertwined with efforts to reclaim cultural identity and community across distances. These themes explore how displacement\, memory and cultural traditions shape the diaspora. Learn more about cultural exhibitions in Canada’s capital.

SUMMARY:Revival: Printmaking in Nunavik (2014–2019)
DESCRIPTION:Revival echoes the beginnings of stonecut printing in Puvirnituq in 1961\, and bears witness to the recent resurgence of this art. Lyne Bastien and Maggie Napartuk have made this possible through traveling workshops offered in communities across Nunavik since 2014. Puvirnituq prints were simple\, unadorned depictions of animals and scenes belonging to traditional Inuit imagery. Now\, sixty years later\, Inuit artists continue to demonstrate a profound desire to keep their culture alive through this art form. Revival gives us a glimpse into the many wonders and challenges of their world. This touring exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Avataq Cultural Institute\, supported by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec as well as the Makivik Corporation.

SUMMARY:Sébastien Gaudette – Ephemeral Language
DESCRIPTION:Sébastien Gaudette’s artistic practice centres on paper — a medium he explores through sculpture\, installation and drawing. His approach creates a graphic dialogue where the gesture leaves only the imprint of movement\, evolving gradually into increasingly complex forms. In doing so\, he challenges the materiality of paper and transforms our perception of it. Crumpled\, folded or torn\, the paper reflects the creative process and becomes the narrative thread that guides his work. \nThe exhibition unfolds like a striking mise-en-scène\, where monumental paper constructions intertwine with metal sculptures and drawings. These temporary installations are assembled directly on-site\, allowing them to integrate with the space they inhabit. The opening takes place April 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, in a joint opening with the 44.4 Mother/Artist Collective at City Hall Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:Montero\, Prokofiev & Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Three sensational female artists deliver a full evening of musical fireworks.\nGabriela Montero’s supernatural musical instinct and dexterity has made her a worldwide phenomenon.\n\nThe NAC Orchestra is delighted to welcome New Zealand guest conductor Gemma New\, who makes her NACO debut with this performance. New brings composer Salina Fisher’s beautiful composition Kintsugi to life and showcases three superlative female artists. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing treasured objects with gold lacquer so that cracks and scars become a beautiful reflection of battles won. Salina’s piece draws a musical parallel\, celebrating the restorative power of music and art. \nVenezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero’s skills and talent border on the mystical—she can play the classics or improvise on any musical theme her audience suggests. The NAC Orchestra is always delighted to welcome her back to Southam Hall! Tonight\, Gabriela plays Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. This concerto is a musical supernova that is bright and beautiful\, as well as a serious workout for any pianist who takes it on. \nIn most symphonies\, the violins take centre stage throughout\, but in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4\, every section gets a chance to shine. It’s optimistic and full of life\, despite the great composer’s struggles with his sexuality and depression.
