SUMMARY:Dueling Pianos
DESCRIPTION:Dave Kalil\, Tyler Kealey and Todd Huckabone have been a staple of the music scene in Ottawa known as the Duelling Pianos. With both Dave and Tyler at the keyboards\, they are held together by Todd on guitar to form a solid show of endless classic hits spanning several decades of music. Playing a blend of requests from the audience\, blistering guitar and piano solos\, three part harmonies\, and random comedic impromptu moments\, their show has won over the crowds they perform for time.

SUMMARY:Grand Corps Malade: On Tour
DESCRIPTION:After a tour of major European venues\, Grand Corps Malade is preparing an intimate original show for Quebec—and the NAC\, of course. Accompanied by three musicians\, he’ll perform a selection of tracks from his latest album\, Reflets\, as well as several of his classics. \nPresented by Jean-Rachid\nin association with Spectra Musique and Midi 20 Canada  \nAnd first to the stage\, we’re honoured to welcome Yao! \nPoetic\, groovy\, funk by moment and soul as a whole\, Yao with his baritone voice\, succeeds in charming us with the warm universe of his sweet poetry and his artistic audacity. His pictorial writing – cast in great sensitivity – reminds us of the textual richness of French rap by MC Solaar\, Abdel Malik and Oxmo Puccino\, with an eclectic pop side – where the musical universes intertwine.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Symphony Orchestra & Stewart Goodyear
DESCRIPTION:Three things to know: \n\nOur friends from the West Coast return to Southam Hall for a can’t-miss performance featuring superstar pianist Stewart Goodyear.\nRachmaninoff’s final concerto for piano and orchestra is so difficult that the pianist for whom it was written never dared to perform it!\nA search for hope in a time of oppression\, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.\n\nMaking music became a matter of life and death for Soviet composers when Joseph Stalin’s Great Terror campaign began a lethal crackdown on artistic dissent. Despite being denounced by the authorities and fearing for his life\, Dmitri Shostakovich penned his Fifth Symphony—a work of artistic heroism in which the composer reacts to the violence\, oppression\, and cruelty of his time. \nSergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is adored by music lovers—and feared by pianists—for its marriage of technical fireworks and passionate melodies. From the tolling of distant bells that haunts the opening to the spirited dances of its finale\, this rollercoaster ride for solo piano and orchestra is brought to life by Canadian pianist Stewart Goodyear\, whose performances of Rachmaninoff’s music “would surely have won the composer’s approval†(Gramophone). \nAnd to commemorate the life of composer Jocelyn Morlock\, the VSO’s Composer in Residence before her untimely death in 2023\, Otto Tausk and the orchestra open the program with Night\, Herself—a moody and mysterious work inspired by Morlock’s love of birdsong and nature. \nArrive Early for a FREE Pre-Concert Performance! \nStart your evening with an inspiring performance by the Sinfonietta\, the advanced string ensemble from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music! Experience a fresh take on ancient virtuosity with Max Richter’s bold 2012 re-imagining of one of classical music’s most iconic —Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. This performance will feature 33 talented young musicians performing Richter’s mesmerizing recomposition of The Four Seasons at 6:30 PM in the NAC’s Peter A Herrndorf Place. Don’t miss this captivating prelude before the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s main concert! \n\n\n\nLearn more in the program notes ›

SUMMARY:Mozart\, Hewitt & Beethoven's Fifth
DESCRIPTION:Experience the miraculous chemistry that happens when two great musical minds fuse into one\, as guest pianist Angela Hewitt interprets Mozart on Southam Hall’s stage.\nMontreal-based composer Keiko Devaux loves playing with electroacoustic sounds then translating them into emotional and genre-blurring music\, resulting in beautiful and otherworldly effects.\nMusic Director Alexander Shelley leads the evening’s performance.\n\nOur concert opens with Devaux’s Listening Underwater\, which was written especially for the NAC Orchestra and had its world premiere in Southam Hall in May 2023. This magical work\, inspired by the communications of whales and other sea life\, transports us to an organic underwater environment that is both familiar and mysterious. \nOttawa-born guest pianist Angela Hewitt performs Mozart like no one else\, capturing the emotion Mozart put into this timeless work. Do not be surprised if your fellow audience members demand that Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 be played over and over. \nThe Orchestra will also take on Beethoven’s super-charged Fifth Symphony\, a piece that is best experienced live. As one of the most recognized works in music history\, it truly has “no predecessor\, no successor in composition” (Christoph Eshenbach\, conductor). You will walk away covered in goosebumps\, more than two centuries after its first performance in 1808. \nOn March 20\, arrive Early for a FREE Pre-Concert Woodwind Performance! \nStart your evening with a delightful pre-concert performance featuring young OrKidstra musicians from 7:15pm-7:45pm in the NAC’s Le Salon. \n\n\n\nLearn more in the program notes ›

SUMMARY:Nobu
DESCRIPTION:Three things to know … \n\nAfter his acclaimed NAC debut in 2023\, Nobu returns for an evening of romantic music that warms the heart and calms the mind.\nBlind since birth\, the Japanese pianist learns every piece of music he performs by ear or by using a Braille score.\nFriends or frenemies? Although Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt respected each other’s music\, they were also fiercely competitive colleagues.\n\nA Nobu concert is as much a musical event as it is a spiritual service. A veteran of the stage since his debut at age 12\, the Japanese pianist has been praised by iconic pianists like Van Cliburn\, who called his performances “truly divine\,” and Menahem Pressler\, who was so moved to hear Nobu that “I had to keep from crying.” \nAnd now\, you have the chance to experience this inspiring performer in an evening of 19th-century music that warms the heart and calms the mind. \nLudwig van Beethoven‘s “Waldstein” Sonata for solo piano is a work of intense drama and dazzling melodies that pushes the boundaries of the piano. Once referred to as “a heroic symphony for piano\,” Beethoven’s sonata will have you at the edge of your seat to watch Nobu’s fingers fly up and down the keyboard. \nAlthough Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt were friends for years\, the music they composed couldn’t have been more different. Explore these contrasting characters when Nobu brings together the passionate poetry of Chopin’s tranquil nocturnes with the demonic energy of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz\, which transforms the piano’s elegant voice into a thunderous drum.
