SUMMARY:Nobu
DESCRIPTION:Three things to know … \n\nAfter his acclaimed NAC debut in 2023\, Nobu returns for an evening of romantic music that warms the heart and calms the mind.\nBlind since birth\, the Japanese pianist learns every piece of music he performs by ear or by using a Braille score.\nFriends or frenemies? Although Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt respected each other’s music\, they were also fiercely competitive colleagues.\n\nA Nobu concert is as much a musical event as it is a spiritual service. A veteran of the stage since his debut at age 12\, the Japanese pianist has been praised by iconic pianists like Van Cliburn\, who called his performances “truly divine\,” and Menahem Pressler\, who was so moved to hear Nobu that “I had to keep from crying.” \nAnd now\, you have the chance to experience this inspiring performer in an evening of 19th-century music that warms the heart and calms the mind. \nLudwig van Beethoven‘s “Waldstein” Sonata for solo piano is a work of intense drama and dazzling melodies that pushes the boundaries of the piano. Once referred to as “a heroic symphony for piano\,” Beethoven’s sonata will have you at the edge of your seat to watch Nobu’s fingers fly up and down the keyboard. \nAlthough Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt were friends for years\, the music they composed couldn’t have been more different. Explore these contrasting characters when Nobu brings together the passionate poetry of Chopin’s tranquil nocturnes with the demonic energy of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz\, which transforms the piano’s elegant voice into a thunderous drum.

SUMMARY:Jekyll & Hyde
DESCRIPTION:With the National Arts Centre Orchestra \nVal Caniparoli\, an American choreographer known for his captivating work with the San Francisco Ballet\, was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic horror novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\, a story that has fascinated him since childhood. The respectable Dr. Jekyll\, haunted by his split personality\, works in his lab to try to separate his good side from his evil one. Will his hidden impulses\, brought to life by his evil twin\, the monstrous Mr. Hyde\, gain the upper hand? \nFrom the foggy streets of London to the horrors of an insane asylum and the elegance of high society\, the ballet grapples with themes of duality\, temptation and the endless struggle between good and evil. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet puts the dancers’ dramatic intensity and impeccable technique centre stage as they passionately bring the two contradictory faces of Jekyll to life. With the spellbinding music of Polish composers including Chopin\, Penderecki\, Górecki\, Kilar and Wieniawski\, you’re sure to get goosebumps! \nDue to its mature content\, Jekyll & Hyde  is rated PG13. Parental discretion is advised. Jekyll & Hyde  includes adult themes presented within the historical context of when the novella was written (1886). \n\n\n\n\n2\nEvent advisories\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMature themes \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSexual content

SUMMARY:Lina Gonzalez-Granados conducts Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Three things to know … \n\nA conductor of “raw power” (LA Times)\, Lina Gonzalez-Granados leads a program that searches for beauty and joy in an imperfect world.\nAlthough it took Brahms 14 years to write his stormy First Symphony\, he completed his sunny Second in just three months.\nComposed in the aftermath of World War II\, Strauss’s concerto for oboe and orchestra offers a peaceful vision of the future.\n\nJohannes Brahms said he had “never written anything so sad” as his Second Symphony\, but a friend described the same work as “all blue sky\, babbling streams\, sunshine\, and cool green shade.” So which is it — a symphony of sorrow or serenity? (Or both?) Find out when you experience Brahms’s wistful\, life-affirming symphony in which sun and storm clouds share the sky. \nNACO’s beloved principal oboe for more than 30 years\, Charles Hamann steps into the spotlight for Richard Strauss‘s tranquil concerto for solo oboe and orchestra. Inspired by a chance meeting between the composer and an oboe-playing American soldier in the final days of World War II\, Strauss’s concerto treats the oboe like an operatic soprano — one who barely has any time to breathe! \nMeanwhile\, experience the Canadian premiere of a deeply personal homage to Ludwig van Beethoven: Jessica Hunt‘s Climb — a reference to her own experience with the simple act of climbing stairs — offers a musical view into living life\, as Beethoven did\, with a chronic disability.

SUMMARY:Montero\, Prokofiev & Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Three sensational female artists deliver a full evening of musical fireworks.\nGabriela Montero’s supernatural musical instinct and dexterity has made her a worldwide phenomenon.\n\nThe NAC Orchestra is delighted to welcome New Zealand guest conductor Gemma New\, who makes her NACO debut with this performance. New brings composer Salina Fisher’s beautiful composition Kintsugi to life and showcases three superlative female artists. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing treasured objects with gold lacquer so that cracks and scars become a beautiful reflection of battles won. Salina’s piece draws a musical parallel\, celebrating the restorative power of music and art. \nVenezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero’s skills and talent border on the mystical—she can play the classics or improvise on any musical theme her audience suggests. The NAC Orchestra is always delighted to welcome her back to Southam Hall! Tonight\, Gabriela plays Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. This concerto is a musical supernova that is bright and beautiful\, as well as a serious workout for any pianist who takes it on. \nIn most symphonies\, the violins take centre stage throughout\, but in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4\, every section gets a chance to shine. It’s optimistic and full of life\, despite the great composer’s struggles with his sexuality and depression.

SUMMARY:MOMIX
DESCRIPTION:For almost 45 years\, MOMIX has captivated audiences of all ages and has developed a worldwide following with its inimitable productions. As a company of dancer-illusionists\, its works artfully fuse dance\, lighting\, musical effects\, costumes\, and video projections. In her search for Wonderland\, our heroine Alice ventures into the burrow of the White Rabbit. SUMMARY:Dylan Gossett - The Back 40 Tour
DESCRIPTION:Dylan Gossett is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Austin\, Texas. Gossett began writing and recording music during his early teen years using Garage Band on his mother’s computer. Throughout high school\, college at Texas A&M\, and a job at Formula 1 Racing\, music remained Gossett’s true passion. Inspired to finally release music by a new generation of singer- songwriters he saw emerging online\, Dylan began posting videos of his songs in April 2023 — immediately\, his music struck a chord with a global audience. \nGossett released his first single “To Be Free” (entirely self-written\, recorded\, produced\, and mixed in his bedroom) in June 2023. Shortly thereafter\, he teased a snippet of what would become his next song and breakout viral hit “Coal.” The video instantly took off\, gaining over one million views within the first week. He quickly got back into his bedroom and created the song from scratch before releasing it in July 2023. Since its release\, “Coal” has garnered over 400 million global streams\, received Platinum Certifications in the United States\, Australia\, Canada and Ireland\, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and the Official Singles Chart Top 100 in the U.K.\, reached the Top Five on the Country Radio Chart in Australia\, and climbed the Spotify U.S. Top 200. The New York Times called “Coal” “one of the year’s best country songs\,” and Billboard declared\, “‘Coal’ and ‘To Be Free’ position Gossett as a formidable\, heart- on-his-sleeve singer-songwriter with immense potential.” \nIn October 2023\, Gossett released his highly anticipated debut EP No Better Time (also self- written\, recorded\, produced\, and mixed in his bedroom) via Big Loud Texas / Mercury Records. The EP received a slew of critical acclaim from The New York Times\, Billboard\, Grammy.com\, Atwood Magazine\, MusicRow\, Holler\, Country Central\, and more. He then followed it up with his widely praised 2024 EP\, Songs In The Gravel\, which he wrote and self-produced\, while also teaming up with notable producers Eddie Spear and Ian Fitchuk on a few tracks. \nOn the touring front\, this fall Gossett embarked on his headlining The Back 40 Tour. Last spring\, his first-ever headline (and international) tour\, dubbed the No Better Time Tour\, sold-out immediately upon on-sale. Gossett has supported Noah Kahan in arenas across Australia\, and Morgan Wallen at Houston’s Minute Maid Park\, as well as opened for Wyatt Flores and Brent Cobb on their fall 2023 tours. This year\, Gossett’s festival trek includes debuts at SXSW\, CMA Fest\, Hangout Music Festival\, Tortuga Music Festival\, Two Step Inn Festival\, and more. \n\nSupport Artist: Tanner Usrey
