SUMMARY:Shelley Conducts Zarathustra
DESCRIPTION:You have heard the opening to Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra \, but did you know it has nine spectacular parts? Experience them all.\nComposer Claude Debussy’s love for the ocean rises and falls in giant waves of sound in La mer. \nIan Cusson is a Canadian Indigenous composer whose music maps and explores the Canadian Indigenous experience.\n\nThus Spake Zarathustra has been an inspiration to other great composers like Aaron Copland and superstar movie score composer John Williams. The first section of this opus was famously used in 2001: A Space Odyssey and most recently in the very first trailer for the blockbuster film Barbie. From the moment you hear its opening low hum and those three crystalline trumpet notes\, you will get why Zarathustra is one for the ages.  \nWe then move onto La mer by the French composer Claude Debussy\, who once thought he would become a sailor but thankfully changed course and turned to music. But he always loved “my old friend\, the sea; it is always endless and beautiful. It really is the thing in nature that best puts you in your place.”  \nThe evening is capped off with music by composer Ian Cusson\, who explores the Canadian Indigenous experience\, including the history of the Métis people and the intersection of Western and Indigenous cultures.  \nAlexander Shelley leads the NAC Orchestra and musicians of the NACO Mentorship Program for the closing night of the season. \n—– \nThe NACO Mentorship program is made possible in part through the generous support of the Friends of the NAC Orchestra. \n\n\n \n There are no program notes for this event.

SUMMARY:Shelley conducts The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:This NACO Mentorship program is made possible in part through the generous support of the Friends of the NAC Orchestra. \n—– \n\nExperience an evening of music that celebrates the joyful eruptions of spring and the warm serenity of the desert. \nElemental\, primordial\, dissonant\, pagan: words that describe Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring making it a deliciously shocking and essential musical experience! \nJohn Luther Adams’s ethereal Become Desert completes a musical trilogy he never intended to write.\n\nThis is a night for mysteries and magic\, as Alexander Shelley leads the NAC Orchestra and participants of the NACO Mentorship Program through some of the classical world’s most otherworldly music from both traditional and contemporary composers.  \nBecome Desert\, by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams\, is a sensory experience that will conjure the sprawling\, shimmering beauty of a vast sea of sand. The warm sun rises\, its tone and intensity changes throughout the day\, and desert life comes and goes. The music evokes the movement of a beautiful but unforgiving landscape.  \nFor years\, the narrative about the riot caused by the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring in 1913 Paris was that the whirling dervish of music and choreography drove audience members to lose their minds. It’s almost a shame it’s not true. But make no mistake: Rite of Spring creates a cathartic\, unruly\, and beautiful musical world that will viscerally pull you in and keep you spinning long after the final note.

SUMMARY:Threads of Fate - James McGowan Ensemble & Kingdom Theatre
DESCRIPTION:This show combines the internationally acclaimed\, award-winning troupe of performers in KingDom Theatre with the jazz-classical fusion James McGowan Ensemble (JME). The JME has released two extended concept albums that have received positive reviews and airplay from all over the world. This non-verbal show is recommended for adults (youth ages 10+ are particularly welcome to join). \nStep into Threads of Fate\, an original physical theatre performance where the path twists and turns with every decision you make as in a labyrinth. It’s the intricate web of choices\, desires\, and fears that shape our lives. With every step\, we are pulled deeper\, questioning our choices yet trying to resist being oppressively controlled. Guided by the ensemble of actors\, you will traverse this labyrinth—one not built of walls\, but of thoughts and emotions in a community. McGowan’s original music composed and adapted for this production amplifies the emotional depth of the experience. \n\”The work is at times theatrical in its parts\, sometimes classical\, sometimes jazz-inspired\, but undoubtedly a grand and beautiful artistic creation” (Paris Move). At times heart-felt\, playful\, chaotic\, epic\, or intimate\, the unique jazz-classical fusion\, twelve-piece ensemble adds a powerful voice to the creation. Each audience member will create their own unique path within\, shaped by a shared collective experience.

SUMMARY:Dylan Gossett - The Back 40 Tour
DESCRIPTION:Dylan Gossett is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Austin\, Texas. Gossett began writing and recording music during his early teen years using Garage Band on his mother’s computer. Throughout high school\, college at Texas A&M\, and a job at Formula 1 Racing\, music remained Gossett’s true passion. Inspired to finally release music by a new generation of singer- songwriters he saw emerging online\, Dylan began posting videos of his songs in April 2023 — immediately\, his music struck a chord with a global audience. \nGossett released his first single “To Be Free” (entirely self-written\, recorded\, produced\, and mixed in his bedroom) in June 2023. Shortly thereafter\, he teased a snippet of what would become his next song and breakout viral hit “Coal.” The video instantly took off\, gaining over one million views within the first week. He quickly got back into his bedroom and created the song from scratch before releasing it in July 2023. Since its release\, “Coal” has garnered over 400 million global streams\, received Platinum Certifications in the United States\, Australia\, Canada and Ireland\, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and the Official Singles Chart Top 100 in the U.K.\, reached the Top Five on the Country Radio Chart in Australia\, and climbed the Spotify U.S. Top 200. The New York Times called “Coal” “one of the year’s best country songs\,” and Billboard declared\, “‘Coal’ and ‘To Be Free’ position Gossett as a formidable\, heart- on-his-sleeve singer-songwriter with immense potential.” \nIn October 2023\, Gossett released his highly anticipated debut EP No Better Time (also self- written\, recorded\, produced\, and mixed in his bedroom) via Big Loud Texas / Mercury Records. The EP received a slew of critical acclaim from The New York Times\, Billboard\, Grammy.com\, Atwood Magazine\, MusicRow\, Holler\, Country Central\, and more. He then followed it up with his widely praised 2024 EP\, Songs In The Gravel\, which he wrote and self-produced\, while also teaming up with notable producers Eddie Spear and Ian Fitchuk on a few tracks. \nOn the touring front\, this fall Gossett embarked on his headlining The Back 40 Tour. Last spring\, his first-ever headline (and international) tour\, dubbed the No Better Time Tour\, sold-out immediately upon on-sale. Gossett has supported Noah Kahan in arenas across Australia\, and Morgan Wallen at Houston’s Minute Maid Park\, as well as opened for Wyatt Flores and Brent Cobb on their fall 2023 tours. This year\, Gossett’s festival trek includes debuts at SXSW\, CMA Fest\, Hangout Music Festival\, Tortuga Music Festival\, Two Step Inn Festival\, and more. \n\nSupport Artist: Tanner Usrey

SUMMARY:MOMIX
DESCRIPTION:For almost 45 years\, MOMIX has captivated audiences of all ages and has developed a worldwide following with its inimitable productions. As a company of dancer-illusionists\, its works artfully fuse dance\, lighting\, musical effects\, costumes\, and video projections. Artistic Director Moses Pendleton is interested in how the human body can investigate non-human worlds\, and Lewis Carroll’s classic tale Alice in Wonderland is a natural fit to let one’s imagination run wild.  \nA magical dream world takes the stage\, bursting at the seams with surprising ingenuity and playful fantasy. In her search for Wonderland\, our heroine Alice ventures into the burrow of the White Rabbit. There\, she is thrown into a universe where the usual laws of space\, time and language are subtly transformed through increasingly madcap imagery. In the scenes that follow\, she meets extraordinarily strange creatures with exceptional abilities. Here\, the stage is MOMIX’s rabbit hole\, and you won’t want to miss this fascinating adventure!  \n\n\n\n\n1\nEvent advisories\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSmoke machine
