Despite being denounced by the authorities and fearing for his life\, Dmitri Shostakovich penned his Fifth Symphony—a work of artistic heroism in which the composer reacts to the violence\, oppression\, and cruelty of his time. \nSergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is adored by music lovers—and feared by pianists—for its marriage of technical fireworks and passionate melodies. From the tolling of distant bells that haunts the opening to the spirited dances of its finale\, this rollercoaster ride for solo piano and orchestra is brought to life by Canadian pianist Stewart Goodyear\, whose performances of Rachmaninoff’s music “would surely have won the composer’s approval†(Gramophone). \nAnd to commemorate the life of composer Jocelyn Morlock\, the VSO’s Composer in Residence before her untimely death in 2023\, Otto Tausk and the orchestra open the program with Night\, Herself—a moody and mysterious work inspired by Morlock’s love of birdsong and nature. \nArrive Early for a FREE Pre-Concert Performance! \nStart your evening with an inspiring performance by the Sinfonietta\, the advanced string ensemble from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music! DESCRIPTION:Experience the miraculous chemistry that happens when two great musical minds fuse into one\, as guest pianist Angela Hewitt interprets Mozart on Southam Hall’s stage.\nMontreal-based composer Keiko Devaux loves playing with electroacoustic sounds then translating them into emotional and genre-blurring music\, resulting in beautiful and otherworldly effects.\nMusic Director Alexander Shelley leads the evening’s performance.\n\nOur concert opens with Devaux’s Listening Underwater\, which was written especially for the NAC Orchestra and had its world premiere in Southam Hall in May 2023. This magical work\, inspired by the communications of whales and other sea life\, transports us to an organic underwater environment that is both familiar and mysterious. \nOttawa-born guest pianist Angela Hewitt performs Mozart like no one else\, capturing the emotion Mozart put into this timeless work. Do not be surprised if your fellow audience members demand that Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 be played over and over. \nThe Orchestra will also take on Beethoven’s super-charged Fifth Symphony\, a piece that is best experienced live. As one of the most recognized works in music history\, it truly has “no predecessor\, no successor in composition” (Christoph Eshenbach\, conductor).
