Administered by the Canada Council for the Arts\, the Awards are this country’s most prestigious distinction for the artists\, curators and craftspeople who make up Canada’s vibrant visual and media arts community.  \nUp to eight prizes are awarded each year: six for artistic achievement\, one for artistic merit in the fine crafts (the Saidye Bronfman Award)\, and one for an outstanding contribution to the contemporary visual arts\, media arts or fine crafts.  \nTo celebrate this year’s Awards\, the winners will be displaying their work throughout the Gallery’s contemporary and historical collections. From installations in the Gallery’s public spaces to interventions disrupting narratives within the permanent collection\, the eight laureates offer a new and unexpected take on art today.

SUMMARY:Rideau Canal Skateway
DESCRIPTION:Every winter\, the Rideau Canal turns into the Rideau Canal Skateway\, aka\, the world’s largest skating rink! From roughly January to late February or March\, you can skate any section of the 7.8 kilometres (4.8 miles) thanks to its universally accessible ramps and facilities. \nStarting (or ending!) downtown and winding its way to Dow’s Lake\, the Rideau Canal Skateway boasts a number of Beavertail stands where you can grab a delicious treat and hot chocolate. You may also spot another local business\, Dunrobin Distilleries\, offering boozy beverages to those 19 years of age and older. \nNon-skaters are welcome to walk or shuffle along the edges of the Skateway (safely away from the skaters)\, or on the pathways alongside the Rideau Canal\, Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. \nIn fact\, the Rideau Canal Skateway is so impressive\, CNN Travel named Ottawa the only Canadian city to visit in 2023 partly because of it! \nDid you know? \nThe ice must be 30 cm in thickness for the Rideau Canal Skateway to open. This means there needs to be about 10-14 straight days of -10 to -20 degree Celsius days in order for the quality of the ice to meet the standards of safe skating! \nCheck out the National Capital Commission’s official Rideau Canal Skateway page with updates as to when the world’s largest skating rink will open\, which parts of the rink are open\, access points\, amenities\, and more.

The Sens\, as they are colloquially known\, are supported by their Sens Army fans and by their friendly hairy mascot\, Spartacat\, who roams the stands giving high fives.   The Senators play at the Canadian Tire Centre in the west-end suburb of Kanata\, which you can reach easily by car or on game-day express buses. Inside the arena\, you can fuel up for the game with food and drinks from a wide range of vendors\, or dine at one of several on-site restaurants and bars.
